Benan (also known as Benne)4145

Merkland, Scotland

Brief Description

Benan is situated in the valley of the River Stinchar at the foot of the distinctive Benan Hill. It was well-wooded in the 16th and 17th centuries.

History

Although there was a wooded park at Benan in the 16th and 17th centuries, maps dating from the latter half of the 18th century do not show the woodland. By the mid-19th century there was a walled garden at Benan and a hint of formal planting that may have been a remnant of a former landscape.
