The Flagstaff (also known as The Welsh Mountain Zoo)1340

Colwyn Bay, Wales

Brief Description

Flagstaff Gardens at the Welsh Mountain Zoo contain the partial remains of formal and informal gardens laid out by Thomas Mawson in the late-19th century on a hilly site overlooking Colwyn Bay.

History

Dr Whitehead, a Manchester surgeon, purchased the land at the Flagstaff at the end of the 19th century and commissioned Thomas Mawson to lay out the grounds. After Dr Whitehead's death in 1913 the estate changed hands several times. It is currently owned and managed by the Welsh Zoological Society, whose aim in the gardens - as in the zoo itself - is an educational one, to conserve fauna and flora.
