Gadgirth (also known as Gadgirth Mains)4162

Ayr, Scotland

Brief Description

Gadgirth Estate is situated within a crook of the River Ayr and includes woodland areas and a walled garden.

History

Gadgirth estate had a long association with the Chalmers family from the 13th century. The original castle was demolished and a new mansion house built in the late-18th century. The mid-20th-century sales particulars show a walled garden with greenhouses and coldframes and a formal garden. The estate was auctioned in lots at this time. The house was demolished about 20 years later after a period as a school. The current owners are restoring what remains of the estate buildings and managing the woodland. Self-catering lodges are available for rental within the old walled garden.
