The formal gardens consist of nine different inter-linked gardens. Features include formal bedding, a rose garden and a herb garden. There is also the Rufford Sculpture Collection. The Friends of Rufford hope to fully restore the gardens soon.
The formal gardens were re-established in the late 1970s although they contain some 18th and 19th century features. The original formal gardens were laid out in the Dutch style in the 1680s. Improvements were made between 1720 and 1734.
